Mattress Sizes & Bed Size Dimensions Guide [2020] [Canada, USA, EU]

Bed Sizes Guide Canada, USA & Europe

Looking for mattress sizes? This article will help you find the right sizes and dimensions for your mattress. Beds come in many sizes, from the small single Twin, queen-size and go all the way to the massive California King. Unfortunately, manufacturing procedures, padding and types of support can all alter the size.

IMPORTANT: This guide offers the most common sizes. It is important to know that there are no legal standard mattress dimensions. As a result, if you are looking for a specific bed size in Canada or the USA, be sure to ask your vendor for exact measurements if you are unclear.

In Canada and the USA, we use terms like Queen, King, Double and so on to define mattress sizes. In other places, like various European countries, the language can be different, and the same name could apply to a very different size. So be on the lookout if your set isn't from North America!

The sizes between coil and foam mattresses vary a bit, but there's a very good reason! Innerspring coil mattresses are much harder and don't squish around as foam mattresses do. As a result, and to make it easier to fit into frames and tuck sheets under them, they're often just a touch smaller. This difference won't be noticeable in your bed frame, so don't worry!

The stiffer nature of the innerspring coil does have to be accounted for, but the manufacturers do that for you.

All these sizes have different intended purposes, and below we've listed those for you! Whether your baby is growing up and you want to get them a real bed to sleep in, or maybe the old double you sleep on isn't good enough for two people anymore, there are options for everyone.

Twin Bed Size Mattress Dimensions

Twin Bed Size or Single Bed Size

(39" × 75")

Despite ‘Twin’ being in the name, twin-sized mattresses are intended to be used by one person.

The Twin mattress dimensions are the smallest size available for adults and children, not including toddler and infant size. This makes it the perfect size mattress for a young child who has grown past the need for a toddler mattress. Twin mattresses are also great for those in adolescence or single adults. Due to its smaller size width and length, it is common in dorm rooms and spaces where more than one mattress is in place. Twin mattress dimensions are smaller and more affordable than larger mattresses.

Their small size means they’ll fit well in most spaces. It’s a great size for growing kids to give them enough space to sleep and grow without taking up so much space in their room. It’s also the most common bed measurements found in dorms due to their compact but comfortable size, though it's a bit short for some college students. Because of that, a lot have switched to the Twin XL.

How long is a Twin bed?

The average length of a single bed is 75 inches.

How wide is a Twin bed?

The average width of the single bed is 39".

  • Gives parents with young children the opportunity to provide a mattress that suits their needs, and is not “too big”.
  • Can be a very great investment for those with a smaller amount of space to allow for their bed.
  • The Twin mattress dimensions measure approximately 38 inches wide and 75 inches in length.
  • Available in both high quality and lower quality models.
  • Many bed frames that accommodate multiple children fit one or more twin size mattresses.
  • Twin bunk beds can save even more space and be a “fun” sleeping environment for children.

Cons:

  • Often the length of a Twin mattress is not great enough to comfortably fit a full sized adult.
  • Twin mattresses are not ideal for more than one person sleeping at a time.

  • The Twin XL can be found in many different qualities and price points. Bunk beds can be found to fit the Twin XL mattress dimensions.

Your height can play a large role in determining the perfect mattress size, especially if you are taller than average. XL or California King mattresses can be ideal as since they provide more length to accommodate longer legs. Or maybe you just need more height to your bed because you have a dog that likes to sleep by your feet. Whatever your reasons, you should figure out how much room you're going to need.

When you are unable to comfortably fit your entire body on your mattress, you are potentially compromising your quality of sleep. With the wide variety of dimensions available, no one should have to sacrifice comfort as a result of their above-average height. Except for certain NBA players but I'm sure they can afford custom mattresses if they need to.

Room Size

The size of the bedroom or space where you would like to place the mattress is another factor to consider when choosing the perfect mattress. A mattress too small or too large can offset the feel of the bedroom and leave it feeling either empty or overloaded. If space is limited a smaller mattress is always recommended, but you do have to keep your other needs in mind. A smaller mattress might be a worthy sacrifice for your dresser set, but you might be better off with less space if you and your partner will push each other off a double-sized mattress.

Before making a purchase, it’s important to measure the room to figure out how much space you have to work with. It helps to set up your bed frame if you already have one before you go shopping because you'll know exactly what you're working with. You want to make sure the room has enough space to safely navigate through, and enough space for other furniture like an end table and/or dresser. Of course, if the room can accommodate a larger mattress, having more space is worth it. Who doesn't want to feel like royalty?

Consider the Height

As mentioned before, the height of the mattress can make or break how useful it is to you. If your bed frame and box-spring are high off the ground, thick mattresses aren't going to serve you very well. Tall beds are harder to get in to, but short beds are harder to get out of. You have to consider all parts of sleeping while figuring out what your sleeping situation is going to look like. You don't want to throw out your back every time you stand up, and you don't want to roll onto your bed every day just because you can't lift your leg. Your mobility affects everything, and it should be accounted for.

Number of Sleepers

For individual sleepers, a Twin or Double-size mattress will provide a good amount of room to make sure a quality sleep. If you share a mattress the bigger you can afford the better. For two people a Queen or King-sized mattresses are ideal. If you’re lacking space, a double-sized mattress is the next best option. It did use to be the standard, it was made for two people at one point. We're just a bit more spoiled than we used to be: and for good reason!

When sharing a mattress with two adults and children or pets a King or California King-sized mattress is considered the best. These large mattresses will provide space for two or more people to sleep comfortably.

Putting a big mattress in a too-small bedroom can be a safety hazard and make the room feel cramped and uncomfortable, but sometimes it's worth the extra comfort to fill the room. Bedrooms aren't meant for much other than sleeping anyways! Just watch for fire hazards!

Custom Sizes

There are some bed frames and furniture that require non-standard sized mattresses, such as the 3/4 size and other antique sizes. Some people require different amounts of space. If you need a mattress with custom dimensions, talk to us! We might be able to help. Whether you are looking for a specific RV mattress size for your Recreational Vehicle (RV), truck, unusual room, or boat, we can custom order mattresses in specific sizes to meet your needs.

Mattress Depth | Bed Depth

Bed depth varies depending on the type of mattress and the company that makes them. Taller beds can be difficult to crawl in to and short ones are harder to get out of, so all Gotta Sleep mattresses are 10.5 inches deep. Some of our competitors go as low as 6 inches and some offer mattresses which are 16 inches thick. This is important to consider when choosing a bed frame and box-spring.
